MCU Writer Weighs In On The Downsides of Marvel's Multiverse

Marvel Studios has been pushing the multiverse since Marvel Phase 4, in which the phenomenon opens up a gate of a whole new possibility such as bringing in characters under the MCU officially, which includes Deadpool 3, and Fantastic Four. Now, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness is off to begin his work on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, expressing his concern on the downside of Marvel’s multiverse.

There is no question that the multiverse is too vast of an experience and concept to explore in a single three-hour film. However, Loveness believes that Marvel’s multiverse has a weakness and that is the wit and knowledge of their audience already having seen the mechanics of it in other films. Check out his full quote below:

“In many ways, it’s too accessible to the audience now, and the challenge is to put your own unique spin on it,” Loveness told in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Because of great things like Rick and Morty, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So I feel that the audience is a bit smarter than we give them credit for, and the trick is to find the humanity in the middle of it.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s beginning on opening the multiverse led to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which Wanda’s pursuit for her alternate reality where her twin boys live, has definitely led to a greater cause in expanding the marvel cinematic universe.

That said, Rick and Morty and Everything Everywhere are perfect examples on how to do the multiverse justice on screen, especially with smart viewers.

Loveness explained that in this sense, he’s going to have to focus on a different aspect for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty: “So I try not to focus on the multiverse; I try to focus on what it means for the particular character who’s facing it.”

It is worth noting that Avengers: Endgame was built on gathering the right Avengers team that ultimately defeated Thanos, so with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty picturing a similar fate, it is crucial that Marvel Studios picks the right set of heroes set off to defeat Kang the Conqueror to achieve a similar success.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently still slated to be released on May 2, 2025.
