As the name implies, the House of the Dragons is primarily centered on dragons and their rule over Westeros 300 years before A Game of Thrones. It's based on George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood. As a precursor, it depicts a world governed and dominated by dragons, which contrasts sharply with A Game of Thrones, where dragons are seldom seen.
The second season is here, introducing more dragons to the roster and implying fiery conflicts as a Targaryen Civil War approaches. Unlike Game of Thrones, it has many dragons, which may make it difficult for spectators to recall each dragon and rider combo.
This guide ranks all the Dragons in Season One and Season Two of The House of The Dragon.
Vhagar
Rider: Aemond Targaryen
The mighty dragon of House Targaryen, Vhagar, hatched in 52 BC, was named after a god from Valyria. It is the oldest living dragon and currently the biggest of all dragons in the series. Many Targaryens of note rode Vhagar throughout her life, like Queen Visenya Targaryen, Prince Baelon Targaryen, Lady Laena Velaryon, and the current rider, Prince Aemond Targaryen. Vhagar's age also adds to her advantage as she has the most battle experience.
Dreamfyre
Rider: Helaena Targaryen
A magnificent blue beast, Dreamfyre is slender and magnificent. Her distinctive silver marks make her special. Born likely close to 32 AC, she is the second most enormous dragon after Vhagar. Her riders were always Targaryens, primarily Princess Rhaena and Queen Helaena.
There was a strong bond between Dreamfyre and young Princess Rhaena. Rhaena, the granddaughter of Aegon the Conqueror, rode Dreamfyre when she was just nine years old, while her current rider is Helaena Targaryen. Dreamfyre laid many eggs, giving birth to more Targaryen dragons.
Caraxes
Rider: Daemon Targaryen
A gigantic, ferocious dragon of House Targaryen is Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm. Nobody knows when he was born, but by 72 AC, he was already large enough to ride. As per size, he is the third largest living dragon in the series. Previously, he had fought two battles with Aemon Targaryen as his rider. They fought together in the Fourth Dornish War in 83 AC and had a big hand in defeating the Dornish. Later, as per the show, he became daemon's pair.
Meleys
Rider: Rhaenys Targaryen
The renowned "Red Queen" dragon, Meleys, was a member of House Targaryen. Imagine a dragon with red and copper scales, horns, and claws. She was noted for her quickness. Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, widely called as "The Queen Who Never Was," was her last rider.
In the Battle of Rook's Rest, she went against King Aegon II's dragon, Sunfyre, and that's when Vhagar joined, too, but not as her ally. No matter how fierce, she couldn't win, leading to her demise.
Syrax
Rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen
Rhaenyra Targaryen owned Syrax, a dragon of House Targaryen. Syrax, named after a Valyrian goddess, is recognized for her distinctive yellow scales. She is enormous and fearsome, ranking sixth in size. However, it does not qualify her as a competent fighter.
She has less combat experience than Caraxes and others, yet she is still incredibly powerful. Even though she is not a ferocious combatant, she contributes significantly to egg laying. As we all know, only a few of the dragons lay eggs in the series.
Sunfyre
Rider: Aegon II Targaryen
Known as Sunfyre the Golden, this male dragon of House Targaryen is a sight. His golden scales shone brilliantly in the daylight, as golden as his fire. Some say he is the prettiest dragon in the whole world. When and where was he born? On Dragonstone, though we're not sure when. Folks did call him a "young" dragon around 120 AC.
Now, who rides Sunfyre? That would be King Aegon II. In the show, unlike Novel, as per season two, Aegon flies to the battle of Rook's Rest but later regrets it. Aegon and Sunfyre attack Meleys, and later, Vhagar joins, which severely injures Sunfyre and his rider.
Tessarion
Rider: Daeron Targaryen
Tessarion, often called the Blue Queen, is a Targaryen she-dragon. She is known for her shiny blue scales and gleaming copper claws, crest, and belly. She is one of the smallest of the Greens' dragons. There is a mention of her in season two, episode three, where she is said to be roughly that of a riding size. As per size, she's a third the size of Vhagar, the current biggest living dragon.
Seasmoke
Rider: Laenor Velaryon
The Dragon with silver-grey scales, Seasmoke, is a House Targaryen dragon. He is large enough for riding, even though he is not that huge, but he does have war experiences as his current rider is Laenor Velaryon, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen's husband. Who later faked his murder and vanished, which resulted in leaving Seasmoke riderless for nearly ten years.
As per season two, we see Rhaenyra mentioning that Seasmoke has now grown "restless," which could also indicate that he might be ready for a new rider.
Vermax
Rider: Jacaerys Velaryon
Meet Vermax, a dragon bonded to Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, both from House Targaryen. Vermax grows noticeably bigger each year. By 129 AC, Vermax had grown to the point where Jacaerys could ride him. In the TV adaptation "House of the Dragon," they painted a fantastic image of Vermax, with his olive green scales and light orange wings. He hatched from the egg given to Jacaerys when he was just an infant. It was done primarily to show his status as a true-born Targaryen.
Tyraxes
Rider: Joffrey Velaryon
Another Targaryen dragon, Tyraxes, is Prince Joffrey Velaryon's companion, the youngest of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen's kids. As per season one, episode 10, Daemon mentions hyraxes when he was listing all the dragons the blacks have. Later in season two, episode three we see that he is smaller than Vermax in size when he, along with Stormcloud, is sent to Lady Arryn in exchange for her army.
Moondancer
Rider: Baela Targaryen
The youthful House Targaryen dragon, Moondancer, is known for her light green scales and agility on land and in the sky. While not initially significant enough to carry her rider, Lady Baela Targaryen, she proliferated. By 130 AC, Baela could ride her. As per season two, Moondancer and Baela were watching over King's Landing for movements that perfectly suited the small dragon. As the most miniature claimed dragon in the entire series, the pair was always away from most of the wars that have taken place.
