Jodie Turner-Smith shares her daughter found The Acolyte trailer 'too' scary, even for a Star Wars fan like her.
Although The Acolyte is not entirely a horror genre, it still is a mystery-thriller that drove Turner-Smith's daughter away from watching her upcoming Disney+ series. Here's how that happened.
Jodie Turner-Smith Made the Mistake of Showing Her Daughter The Acolyte
Jodie Turner-Smith plays a new character named Mother Aniseya, created specifically for The Acolyte. While eager to watch the trailer with her daughter, she was surprised at the unexpected turn of events.
"I put [the trailer] on and I was with my daughter, and I was so excited like, 'Look, it's mommy in Star Wars!' and she was like, 'Scary!'" Turner-Smith shared.
Her 4-year-old daughter, Juno Rose Diana Jackson, is a huge Star Wars fan.
Mostly after coming from the animated show, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, which might explain her shocking reaction upon being shown the official trailer for The Acolyte.
The 37-year-old British actress surmised that it was probably due to the lightsabers that caught her daughter off-guard, "I was like, 'Oh, sorry.' There's a lot of lightsabers going off, but I was just so excited! I've never been so excited to watch myself in something."
Count in the fact that The Acolyte is supposed to show the darker side of the galaxy emerging in the final days of the High Republic Era with the story between Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-Jae) reuniting with his former apprentice, Mae (Amandla Stenberg).
The Acolyte Star Teases What to Expect From Her Character
Jodie knows how passionate Star Wars fans are about depicting the story straight and the characters right, including in The Acolyte. So, she finds herself quite lucky to have been given a new role that she could hone on her own.
"I had the advantage of playing a character that [hasn't] necessarily been portrayed yet or existed," she said, "So, I got to originate the character. 'No one's got anything to compare it to.'"
Mother Aniseya is described as a "leader of a mysterious coven of witches on Brendok." Their values lie in keeping their independence and preserving their beliefs and powers, all the while being quite knowledgeable "in the arcane ways of the Force."
When asked how Mother Aniseya uses her powers, Jodie laughs, trying to gauge her response so as not to spoil anything for the series and fans.
"Mother Aniseya uses her power to protect," Turner-Smith reveals, "She is protecting her community, her family, and that's her main objective. She's wielding it to protect their kind and their way of life."
