There’s controversy surrounding the upcoming Lovely Complex English dub release. This is because a contractor working on the dub shared a post detailing major changes to the anime’s story in the English language version.

As the post got a lot of attention, a producer at Discotek Media shared a statement addressing the concerns brought about by the controversy.

Lovely Complex (or Love Com) is one of the most popular romantic comedy manga from the 2000s. The manga got an anime adaptation by Toei Animation back in 2007, and it has become popular around the world.

Even though the anime did not get a sequel, the series has since gotten other projects like a manga spinoff and a live-action film.

The American entertainment company Discotek Media distributed a box set of the entire anime with English subtitles back in 2013.

A decade later, Discotek announced that it would release an English dub version of Love Com. It was finally released just a few weeks ago.

For this new dub, Discotek tapped Sound Cadence Studios, which also worked on dubs for titles like A Couple of Cuckoos and Kemono Friends.

In a now-deleted post on Patreon, YouTuber and voice actor JelloApocalypse shared that he was asked to work on the dub as a freelance contractor by his friend Marissa Lenti who is also a writer and voice actor.

Thus, JelloApocalypse stated that the views on his post are his own and are not representative of Sound Cadence Studios and other dub staff members.

He then proceeded to detail his criticisms of Lovely Complex’s story. JelloApocalypse mentioned how they changed the script and edited parts that they deemed problematic.

The post proved to be controversial as it made strong statements about the original script, as well as their work on the new dub.

These changes also tie into the recent discourse surrounding the English localization of Japanese anime and games.

In response to the Lovely Complex dub controversy, Discotek Media’s Justin Sevakis shared a statement on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.

There, Sevakis said that they were aware of the comments made by a contractor. He also stated that the “English version was made with the supervision and approval of the show’s original producers.”

Sevakis also clarified that English dubs for anime tend to have changes so that they can “provoke the intended response” and that “there will always be shades of grey when adapting a work.”

To end, Sevakis said in the statement that they are disappointed by the contractor’s lack of professionalism and that they will not be working with him again.

The Lovely Complex Blu-ray featuring Discotek’s new English dub is available now in stores such as Amazon.
