What is Nyaight of the Living Cat About?

Nyaight of the Living Cat, seemingly derived from the 1968 classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero, is about a mysterious virus that has spread into a worldwide pandemic.

People mysteriously transform into cats when they cuddle the cute felines. So, to stop the spread—because who can resist petting a cat?—protagonist Kunagi must fight the urge to snuggle them in order to survive.

Fun fact: “Nya” is the Japanese equivalent of “meow,” which is why the original manga title Night of the Living Cat was cleverly turned into Nyaight of the Living Cat.

Meanwhile, the premiere episode, titled Subete ga Neko ni Naru or Everything Becomes Cat, proved the anime is a fun watch thanks to its hilarious theme, blending zombie horror with absurd comedy that puts a fresh and funny spin on the genre.

It even includes clever references to classic horror films like The Thing and Alien—only this time, with cats in the lead.

With this clever twist, Kunagi, Kaoru, Tsutsumi, Tanishi, and Gaku must do more than avoid the cats to survive. They have to resist the urge to pet them.

To do this, even common cat knowledge is quickly adapted into zombie-like survival rules. They use water to evade cats, catnip to distract them, and cat allergies to detect their presence.

That said, instead of instilling fear, the show delights with plenty of adorable cat and kitten scenes. In this world, people aren’t dying from zombie bites—they’re dying from their overwhelming love for cats.

So, the real question is: how long can Kunagi and his group resist these cuddly little creatures to survive?
