KiKi’s Delivery Service and McDonald’s Japan revealed a new collaboration that sees the beloved characters and their world in a modern animation design.
The collab is made to celebrate the arrival of three limited-edition menu items inspired by the enchanting world of Kiki from the beloved fantasy novel.
McDonald’s Taps KiKi’s Delivery Service for New Animated Commercial
KiKi’s Delivery Service rose to worldwide acclaim partly because of the 1989 Studio Ghibli film. But before it was made into the classic film fans have grown to love, it was originally a children’s fantasy novel by Japanese author Eiko Kadono.
Now, nearly 35 years after the beloved Studio Ghibli film premiered, McDonald’s Japan is reliving the nostalgia of Kiki’s world with the reveal of a new collaboration.
This partnership sees the little witch Kiki and her black cat Jiji in an animated commercial where they ride on broomsticks and deliver special burgers from various European countries, similar to the film’s events.
The commercial features new animated designs for the characters and their world.
Although it retains the vibrant and lively animation style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's classic film, this new commercial presents a modern redesign of Kiki, Jiji, and their world.
The crossover also tapped two well-known anime voice actors to portray Kiki and Jiji in the commercial.
Kiki is voiced by none other than the popular VA Aoi Yuuki, who is probably best known for her role as Maomao in the hit historical anime The Apothecary Diaries.
Meanwhile, Jiji is voiced by veteran VA Daisuke Sakaguchi, who is known for portraying Shinpachi Shimura in the comedy anime Gintama.
KiKi’s Delivery Service x McDonald’s Japan Menu Items
The commercial was made to promote the arrival of three limited-time menu items for McDonald’s Japan.
The menu includes German Potato and Beef (a beef patty with German potato filling and mustard sauce), Peperon Juicy Hot Chicken (a chicken patty with red pepper breading and garlic mayo), and Bouillabaisse-Style Shrimp (a breaded shrimp patty with bouillabaisse sauce and aioli).
The limited-edition burgers will come with packaging that features art of Kiki and Jiji.
Will the Collab Arrive in the US?
Currently, the special menu items from the collaboration will be available for a limited time in Japan exclusively. The commercial will begin airing on Japanese TV on June 25, while the burgers will be available to order beginning June 26.
There’s no word on whether the crossover will make its way to the US for now, but fans may hold out hope given that McDonald’s brought the recent WcDonald’s campaign to global markets, including the US.
