In Suzanne Collins' upcoming prequel novel for her beloved The Hunger Games franchise, the story will be centered on a player who has already made his debut. How old was Haymitch in his games in the franchise?
Sunrise on the Reaping Puts the Spotlight on Katniss Everdeen's Mentor
The Hunger Games author is not done building the world of Panem and the twelve districts. Recently, she announced that the novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, is slated to be released on March 18, 2025.
Ahead of the novel's debut, Collins also confirmed that the movie adaptation of it will follow suit, set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
Inspired by the 18th-century Scottish philosopher David Hume, whose "idea of implicit submission" intrigued the author. Collins hopes to deep-dive into the use of propaganda and how the power of those who 'control the narrative' is utilized, "The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."
Since Sunrise of the Reaping takes place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark's win and 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, then the fifth novel will spotlight their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy.
But how old was Haymitch in his games?

How Old Was Haymitch Abernathy in His Hunger Games?
In the annual Hunger Games, the twelve districts must pull one boy and one girl from the lottery, in which the chosen ones are required to participate in the deadly tradition the capitol hosts in the Panem stadium.
The only eligible children for reaping are those between the ages of 12 and 18. Once they turn 19, they are officially not eligible to participate in the reaping and the Hunger Games. So, what could this mean for the District 12 victor Haymitch?
Haymitch was 16 years old when he won in the 50th Hunger Games, pitting him around the same age as Katniss, Peeta, and Lucy Gray Baird.
Haymitch competed in the Second Quarter Quell, leaving behind her mother, brother, and girlfriend, all of whom President Snow killed after he was crowned victor. He managed to survive well on his own and pretty much similar to the previous Hunger Games, the end was brutal and bloody.
It's possible that Sunrise will be pulling the same trick with how Tom Blyth portrayed President Cornelius instead of Donald Sutherland, which begs the question, who would be the perfect cast to play the younger Woody Harrelson?
