The much-awaited Dance of the Dragons finally comes in House of the Dragon Season 2 as Rhaenyra plans the war with her small council.
Her council played a significant role in the monarch’s reign, and the Queen had a group of supporters who supported her in her fight for the Iron Throne and against the Greens.
Lords, knights, and royal family members are all appointed to specific roles. In Rhaenyra’s case, her local allies, Queensguard, and family members are her council.
Now that Rhaenyra’s influence has expanded and many have sworn their loyalty, meet her loyal council.
Rhaenyra Targaryen
Of course, Rhaenyra is part of the board as the leader of the Black Council. She has the final say in the decisions as the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
It has been the Black Council’s purpose to see Rhaenyra take control of the throne in King’s Landing and help her how to do so.
However, though Rhaenyra avoids violence, the war pushes her to do so.
Daemon Targaryen
As Rhaenyra’s uncle-husband, Daemon Targaryen is her King Consort.
Though he, too, seems to have an interest in the Iron Throne as King Viserys’ brother, his common interest with Rhaenyra makes him remain by her side.
As one of the most prominent warriors and dragonriders in the Seven Kingdoms, he and his dragon Caraxes have brought Harrenhal and the Riverlands back to Rhaenyra.
Rhaenys Targaryen
Rhaenys is a Targaryen and has been granted a position on the council. She’s also a powerful dragonrider, making her a formidable part of the team.
She has brought House Velaryon onto Rhaenyra’s side. Though she and Rhaenyra don’t often understand each other, Rhaenys always defends her cousin.
She consistently enforces Rhaenyra’s rule and helps maintain order, making her a valuable ally.
Lord Corlys Velaryon
Lord Corlys Velaryon is Rhaenys’ husband and an invaluable Rhaenyra council member.
He commands the largest fleet in Westeros and is the ruler of one of the wealthiest families on the continent.
With his influence, he established a naval blockade of King’s Landing in the Gullet after Aegon II and the Greens usurped the Iron Throne.
Jacaerys Velaryon
Jacaerys Velaryon is not only part of Rhaenyra’s council because he is her son.
He’s a passionate and competent dragonrider, who has proven his worth by delegating with House Stark and House Arryn and bringing valuable allies to the Blacks.
In House of the Dragon Season 2, he has finally been granted to attend the Black Council meetings as a member of her mother’s loyal family and, of course, as the rightful heir.
If Rhaenyra wins the war and claims the Iron Throne, Jacaerys is set to rule the Seven Kingdoms as the king someday.
Baela Targaryen
Baela Targaryen has acquired a seat on the Black Council as the daughter of Daemon to Laena Velaryon and Rhaenyra’s stepchild/cousin.
She is Corlys and Rhaenys’ granddaughter and Jacaerys’ betrothed.
Now that Rhaenyra has tasked her to surveil King’s Landing with her dragon, Moondancer, she’s about to prove her worth.
Rhaena Targaryen
Rhaena Targaryen is Baela’s twin sister. She was previously betrothed to Lucerys Velaryon before he died in the first season finale.
Though she barely appears in the TV series, she’s part of Rhaenyra’s council due to her familial relations.
Her dragon, Morning, isn’t large enough yet to be ridden, so she mostly stays as a background character.
Lord Simon Staunton
Lord Simon Staunton is the first member of Rhaenyra’s council who isn’t part of the family.
He heads House Staunton and is the Lord of Rook’s Rest. Although he may be a lesser lord in Westeros, his name and castle play major roles in the war.
The Battle of Rook’s Rest is one of the most significant moments in the battle.
Lord Bartimos Celtigar
House Celtigar has an important connection with the Targaryens. The Celtigars also have Valyrian blood, like the royal family.
Hence, there’s a reason Lord Bartimos Celtigar is part of the Black Council.
He was even in the assembly during the first season. Though he rarely appears on the small screen, he still plays a pivotal role in the committee.
Ser Alfred Broome
Though House Broome is a lesser noble house in Westeros, Ser Alfred Broome has taken the seat of a knight on Rhaenyra’s council.
Compared to other knights, he has his seat at the table, thanks to his role as a garrisoned knight on Dragonstone for decades before the war.
That said, he could also be in charge of the garrison on the island.
Maester Gerardys
The small councils in Games of Thrones and House of the Dragon have their maesters. If the Greens have Maester Orwyle, the Blacks have Maester Gerardys.
He has witnessed all the important events in the Targaryen family, from Rhaenyra and Demon’s wedding to the Queen’s pregnancies. He is also Jacaerys’ teacher.
As a trusted person in the family, he has become a part of the Black Council and is always present during the meetings.
Ser Lorrent Marbrand
Ser Lorrent Marbrand was a former member of King Viserys Targaryen’s Kingsguard, but the monarch assigned him to Rhaenyra before he died.
He has sworn his allegiance to the Blacks after Daemon threatens to burn him alive and has always been in Dragonstone when the war begins.
Despite Daemon’s threat, Lorrent has been loyal to Rhaenyra and is always there to protect her.
Ser Steffon Darklyn
Ser Steffon Darklyn was also a member of King Viserys’ Kingsguard before he started serving Rhaenyra.
He’s considered one of the most experienced knights in the realm, having served the royal family since King Jaehaerys.
Steffon strongly believes that Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, and as a member of her Queensguard, he has always attended the Black Council meetings.
As houses from the whole realm have picked sides, Rhaenyra has her council to help her gain more allegiance.
Fans must stay tuned to see who will remain loyal and betray Rhaenyra as the war begins.
House of the Dragon Season 2 airs every Sunday on HBO.
