House of the Dragon Season 2 may have started with the introduction of Blood and Cheese and their brutal task to kill King Aegon’s son, but the show has also introduced another character that will play an essential part in the show: Hugh Hammer.

Played by Kieran Bew, Hugh was first seen in House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 1, titled A Son for a Son, requesting more funds to build the gigantic dragon-killing crossbows.

He was then seen in the following episodes. However, though he seems to be a supporting character, Hugh is about to have a significant role in the series.

So, who is Hugh Hammer, and what’s his importance in House of the Dragon? Read on to know.

House of the Dragon Season 2 gives Hugh more importance than its source material, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Hugh represents the smallfolk in King’s Landing, where their likes become the victims of the war, called the Dance of the Dragons, with them suffering the consequences.

After Aemond Targaryen starts ruling the kingdom due to the absence of Aegon after falling into injuries following the Battle at Rook’s Rest, his first order is to close the gates of King’s Landing.

The poor Hugh can’t leave the city to seek help for his sick daughter. Add that to his not being paid for his services, and Hugh will go against the rulers of Westeros.

A riot is waiting to unfold, and it may be led by Hugh, serving as leader of the smallfolk in King’s Landing.

As a blacksmith bastard who claims Targaryen descent, he will become one of the many dragonseeds who will side with the Blacks and support Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

This will soon happen in House of the Dragon Season 2 after Jacaerys Velaryon suggests to his mother the call for “dragonseeds,” the Targaryen and Velaryon bastards, to try to claim the Blacks’ riderless dragons on Dragonstone.

Hugh will be one of several people who will answer the Sowing of the Seeds call and successfully bond with the dragon, Vermithor.

Vermithor was first introduced in the first season finale as the former dragon of the late King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.

In addition to Hugh, other dragonseeds who will claim the riderless dragons are Addam of Hull, who will claim Laenor’s Seamoke, Ulf White, who will take Queen Alysanne’s Silverwing, and Nettles, who will ride Sheepstealer.

However, it remains to be seen if Nettles will appear in the series. Two wild dragons will remain unclaimed: The Cannibal and Grey Ghost.

Hugh is set to join Rhaenyra’s army, which will boost her strength as the war continues.

With only three episodes left, it remains to be seen if Hugh will be introduced as a dragonseed in House of the Dragon Season 2.

House of the Dragon Season 2 airs every Sunday on HBO.
