After the huge success of Uncharted and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the past few months, it seems that video game film adaptations are becoming the next big trend in Hollywood as we've been hearing several announcements of some of our favorite video games getting a film or TV treatment in several studios and networks. Now, another popular video game is racing its way to the big screen.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are working on a film adaptation of the popular racing video game Gran Turismo. The project is in very early development at the moment. Neil Blomkamp, the director behind films such as District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, is being eyed to helm the film. The story details are under wraps for now.
In case you're not familiar, Gran Turismo is a series of racing simulation video games that launched in 1997 and has since then sold over 85 million units worldwide making it the highest-selling video game franchise under the PlayStation brand. It is being hailed as one of the best racing video games thanks to its graphic, the number of licensed vehicles that you can play, attention to detail, and accurate physics.
Some of the other projects that PlayStation Productions is working on are film adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima and Jak and Daxter and TV series adaptations of The Last of Us (HBO), Twisted Metal (Peacock), God of War (Prime Video), and Horizon (Netflix).
It's not surprising to hear that Gran Turismo is also getting a screen adaptation since a lot of video games nowadays are getting film and TV adaptations now that Hollywood is recognizing them as a valuable IP. Hopefully, it will be a great racing film and a satisfying adaptation unlike the film adaptation of Need for Speed which was panned by the critics when it was released in 2014.
