For years, there has been the so-called "video game movie curse" as most films based on video games have been either a flop, badly received by the critics, or only a modest success. However, recently, it seems like the curse is being taken down thanks to a follow-up film of a blue hedgehog.
Collider and Box Office Mojo have reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now the highest-grossing video game movie in the US as it has grossed $160.9 million so far domestically. It beat the first Sonic the Hedgehog film which had a domestic gross of $146 million. In terms of the worldwide box office, the sequel has also outgrossed the first film as it has earned $323.5 million compared to the first one's $320.9 million.
The official Sonic the Hedgehog movie Twitter account also confirmed their recent achievement. You can check their tweet below:
However, in terms of the overall worldwide box office, it is still a long road for them to beat the number one film which is 2016's Warcraft as it grossed $439 million although it only had a domestic box office gross of $47.3 million. It seems to be unlikely that they'll be able to get to that number. Another video game movie this year, Uncharted, also managed to gross $395 million worldwide.
Either way, it is impressive that they were able to reach those numbers domestically and it just shows that a lot of people really like the film. While the critics' ratings were not high, the most important thing is that they were able to get high box office numbers, especially now that they are setting up a franchise with more films and a Paramount+ show.
The film's logline reads: "After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."
