A few months ago, we learned that a TV series adaptation of the hit video game Twisted Metal was in the works that will star Anthony Mackie (aka the current Captain America in the MCU). For some time, we haven't heard many updates regarding the project and, now, it looks they finally found their home.
Variety has reported that the Twisted Metal TV series has officially landed at Peacock with a series order. The half-hour action-comedy will star Mackie as John Doe, who is described as "a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives. With no memory of his past, John gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck."
The series is based on an original take by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Cobra Kai's Michael Jonathan Smith will serve as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Reese and Wenick will also serve as executive producers alongside Mackie, Will Arnett, Marc Forman, Jason Spire, Peter Principato, Carter Swan, and Hermen Hulst. Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television will produce.
It is great that the project has finally found a streaming service that will serve as its home and has also received a series order which means that they are officially moving forward past the early development phase. Twisted Metal is definitely a popular video game franchise that might attract a lot of subscribers for Peacock once the series airs and it is also one of the projects that PlayStation Productions is currently developing as they are crossing the film and TV medium.
Based on the description, it also looks like the TV series adaptation will be different from the video game which might be necessary since the source material doesn't really have a concrete story since it is a demolition derby game after all. It would be interesting to see their take on the video game, especially since it stars Mackie, who is undeniably a wonderful actor in the action genre as we've seen him in the MCU.
