- Key Update: Sarah Michelle Gellar requested that fans avoid seeking out the cancelled Hulu pilot or leaked scripts.
- Status: Confirmed

- Quick Answer: Gellar opposes a pilot leak because the footage is an unfinished "learning tool" that doesn't accurately reflect the intended creative vision for the revival.
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently explained why she doesn't want the cancelled Buffy reboot's pilot to leak online despite the clamoring from some fans.
Ever since the actress's announcement last weekend that the revival of the hit '90s series is no longer moving forward at Hulu, fans have been wondering why the project was shelved. Some are also hoping that the pilot will be leaked online so they can check for themselves whether the streamer really made the right decision.
Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Hopes for the Buffy Reboot Pilot to Not Leak

In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio (via The Hollywood Reporter), Gellar offered her thoughts on the idea from some fans that the unaired pilot for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot should leak online.
She explained that she doesn't want it to leak because it is "not finished" and she wants to avoid the potential discourse from fans.
"I actually hope it doesn’t because then everyone’s going to have an opinion on this and that, and pilots are not finished. It wasn’t done, right? It’s not like we did a season and finished it and then they shelved it. It’s not like when they made the Batgirl movie and didn’t [release] it. That movie was finished," she said.
"You make a pilot — and I want to clarify this — we made a pilot [first instead of a full season] on purpose because there’s some new characters and you want to see how it goes. There are things you learn from it, and there are things you fix. Usually, [the first version of a] pilot doesn’t air; it’s a learning tool."
Gellar continued, "The original Buffy pilot [had] nothing to do with the show. It was a different Willow. It was a very different show. But those are learning tools and that’s what a pilot is."
The actress also cautioned fans to avoid reading the script that has allegedly leaked online since it doesn't reflect the vision that they have.
"I’ve seen a version of the script out there. It’s not actually correct. That stuff is really unfortunate, and I ask fans if you see scripts — if you see it leaked — don’t watch it because you’re not getting our vision and all of that," Gellar said.
Why Hulu Decided to Cancel the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot

A recent report shed some light on what led Hulu to the decision to shelve the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot after the pilot was produced.
They heard from sources that the original pilot, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao, was "not perfect," prompting a script rewrite by writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
There was an expectation that the project might still move forward. However, by Friday last week, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich informed the executive producers, which include Gellar, that it had been cancelled.
The report claimed that, after the original pilot was screened, Hulu had concerns that "it played too young" and some of the executives also felt that the potential series was too "small." This is despite the initial mandate that the reboot would keep the spirit of the original.
Despite the project's cancellation, there is still an intention for Hulu to develop another take on the Buffy IP within the next couple of years.
