Just before the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival could see the light of day, Hulu ultimately canceled the show.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who led the original series as Buffy Summers, announced the cancellation on her social media account.

Tentatively titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, it has been a year since Hulu ordered a pilot for the series.

However, now that it has reportedly been canceled, apparently due to the network being unhappy with director Chloé Zhao’s pilot episode, it may not be the end of the franchise at all.

In fact, Deadline reported that there had been talks about reworking the pilot. But while Hulu opted not to proceed with it, the network “remains high on the Buffy IP and plans to regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise.”

Gellar, meanwhile, had been refusing to do a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival for years – until Zhao approached her.

“I never heard a take or a reason to do it,” she told ComicBook. “Then Chloé Zhao came to me, and she had the reasons, and she had the take. Also, I was in a different place. The world was in a different place.”

If she ever plans to return to the franchise, there are two ways that it could happen. One is that it could be a commissioned show focused on her original character.

This approach may capitalize on nostalgia, which may not appeal to all fans. As a result, the series may continue Zhao’s plan to introduce a new Slayer while keeping Gellar involved to attract both new and longtime viewers.

Anyhow, it remains to be seen what will happen with this IP after Hulu’s cancellation.

Why Hulu Canceled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot?

Gellar broke the news that Hulu had canceled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in a post on Instagram on Saturday, March 14.

“I wanted you to hear it from me that, unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with the Buffy reboot,” she said. “I am really sad about it, but I also want to thank all of you, the fans, for the incredible support and excitement.”

New Sunnydale was officially announced in February 2025, with Chloé Zhao at the helm and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as the scriptwriters.

While Gellar “never thought” she would be back in “Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” she officially signed off, referencing a famous line from the show: “If the apocalypse comes, beep me.”

Zhao, on the other hand, revealed that she wasn’t surprised by Hulu’s cancellation.

“I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah [Michelle Gellar], with all the cast and crew doing this. And we, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show,” she told Variety. “Our priority for Sarah and for us has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans. So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and we welcome the mystery. And what this might lead us to.”

When asked if she and Gellar would be offering the project to other distributors, Zhao teased, “Welcome the mystery.”

In addition, Armstrong thanked everyone who has supported her and the show.

“Throughout the past couple of months, it’s been really special. I’m really proud of what we did. I’m sad that you guys won’t be able to see it, but that doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had,” she said on her Instagram story.

She also thanked Gellar, Zhao, and the cast she had worked with, adding that Buffy “is not going anywhere.”

“Who knows what the future will hold,” she teased.
