Why does Emma keep her insomnia a secret from Robert? Insomnia episode 3 titled This Family is So F*cked Up shows Robert accidentally discovering his wife's newly set up security cameras and is shocked to see one particular near-incident on-screen.

Considering that Emma's husband, Robert, should be the first to know about what she's going through, this begs the question, what does she have to hide from him?

Emma's Sleepwalking Condition Poses a Threat to Her Family

As if the first two episodes weren't already scary enough, episode 3 takes it up a notch when Emma has once again woken up in a muddy place by the pond across their house, unable to recall what her body had been up to last night.

This becomes Emma's last straw. She invested in setting up security cameras all over her house to study and learn about her sleepwalking habits. Sure enough, she did, but not in the most conventional way.

Emma finds herself lighting a candle and playing a vinyl record, all while preparing herself a bath in the middle of the night. But that's not all of it.

At one point, Robert spots Emma recorded on camera: she was carrying a pillow and was seemingly about to suffocate their son, Will, as he sleeps.

Now, the question is, why did Emma have to keep her insomnia a secret from Robert?

Insomnia Ep 3 Sheds Light on Emma and Robert Working Things Out

Think back to what the first two episodes showed. Emma was gravely traumatized after her childhood experience with her mother, who had the same sleepwalking condition when she and her sister, Phoebe, were still little.

Phoebe nearly died when their mother tried to suffocate her with a pillow, too.

Emma wanted to keep her family safe by distancing them from the fact she was developing the same condition her mother had. But this is where she draws the line.

As Emma wants to finally fess up and tell her family what's really going on with her, Robert catches her in the act.

When he watches the security camera footage, he finds a sleepwalking Emma who is about to smother their son in his sleep.

Thankfully, though, Will was still in deep sleep, safe and sound when Robert came to his room.

Emma tells Robert the truth, and she couldn't have asked for a better partner who could support her through this dilemma.
