Netflix is on a roll with its December releases this year, and one of the projects fans are most looking forward to is Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, which is slated to premiere on the 15th. Considering the film used to be a movie pitch for Star Wars, what is Rebel Moon based on, exactly?
Rebel Moon's Inspiring Origins Explained
Zack Snyder's name has always been affiliated with the DC Universe, specifically with the Justice League aka the Snyder Cut, which comic book fans demanded for years. However, Snyder is after a new adventure of his own after he departed from the DCEU.
Now, Snyder embarked on a new deal to get his two-part film, Rebel Moon, on Netflix, which wasn't as smooth sailing as anyone would have thought.
Although Snyder envisioned Seven Samurai in space for a Lucasfilm production, it was his wife, Debbie Snyder, who convinced him to distance his project from the franchise.
Why Rebel Moon Departed From Star Wars
From initially being a potential part of the Star Wars franchise, Rebel Moon became its original film altogether, and here's why.
Zack Snyder explained at this year's Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) the process that involved the changes behind the former Star Wars movie he pitched to Lucasfilm:
"[Rebel Moon] ends up bring nearly 100% different than what I had intended. What happened was when we split off from Star Wars, Debbie [Snyder] was like, 'That's the best news ever because now you're not...' It's literally what she said, that if you have a hard time with DC, this is going to be a million times worse."
Despite being a completely different film altogether, Rebel Moon still managed to borrow Star Wars-esque elements, such as the lightsabers and the concept of intergalactic warfare. It also draws massive inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai films.
As Snyder added in the same interview, "I used three references [Excalibur and Star Wars, and heavy metal] because they all came together for me in the early '80s and created my love of fantasy art, fantasy storytelling, [and] science fiction."
