Netflix has recently announced a new Stranger Things prequel series slated to premiere in 2028.
Following the airing of the main show's finale on December 31, fans have been wondering what's next in the Stranger Things franchise and whether there are plans to do more spinoff projects to expand the lore of the Upside Down.
Now, we finally know what we can expect next in the Stranger Things universe.
What to Expect in Stranger Things Prequel 'Other Worlds'
According to Variety, Netflix has given an official series order to the Stranger Things prequel titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure.
The announcement came as part of today's "Stranger Things Day" celebration, which marks the day when Will Byers disappeared on November 6, 1983. The prequel is slated to premiere in 2028.
Plot details for the upcoming series are still under wraps, but it is expected to take place in 1955 in Marion, Nevada, before the events of the main series and the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The series is co-created by the Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefrey, a writer from the main series who will serve as the showrunner of the prequel. Joe Wright will be directing the first three episodes.
"We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating. We’re so grateful to our incredible team of collaborators: our showrunner Kate Trefry, who has been in the trenches with us since Season 2 and wrote Stranger Things: The First Shadow; and our director, Joe Wright, a brilliant artist whose work we’ve long admired," the Duffer Brothers said in the announcement.
"We can’t wait for you to see what they’re cooking up. It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!"

Meanwhile, the third season of Stranger Things: Tales from '85, which aired its second season last September, has not been announced by Netflix.
In a response to a fan on Instagram, showrunner Eric Robles shared that they are waiting for the viewership reports to decide whether the series will get a third season.
"Viewership motivates a new season pickup, so help me spread the word," he said.
The reports indicate that the show's second season has significantly lagged in its viewership numbers compared to the first season when it aired earlier this year.
For now, let's wait for potential news and announcements regarding the animated show's future in the coming weeks.
