Why Is Sinestro Asking About John in Lanterns Episode 2?
Sinestro may only have a brief appearance in Lanterns Episode 2, but his presence is felt throughout the episode.
In fact, Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), who happens to be from Gotham City, revealed that Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) kept saying the villain’s name in his sleep after being shot while trespassing on William Macon’s (Garret Dillahunt) ranch during an unauthorized investigation.
A little later, Hal put on his Green Lantern suit and visited Sinestro in prison. As the episode introduced the Manhunter mystery, Hal asked his former mentor, who trained him when he first joined the Green Lantern Corps, what he knew about it.
However, Sinestro quickly snapped back by asking Hal about John. While the episode ended there, Sinestro, as a master of willpower himself, may have sensed John’s extraordinary latent power after seeing him keep a green construct bird alive.
John was even able to maintain the projection without wearing a Power Ring, which surprised Hal, judging by his reaction when he witnessed it himself.
Hal noted that this level of raw power is already an advanced feat, even for seasoned Green Lanterns like him, and is an ability that is difficult to achieve.
As Sinestro dismissed the threat posed by the Manhunter, calling it the “second greatest threat” Hal was facing, it appeared that he was playing psychological games with Hal. By bringing up John’s potential, Sinestro could be exploiting Hal’s insecurities about being replaced.
By the looks of it, the extremely powerful rookie could completely change the current balance of power, and it might even affect Sinestro.
What Are the Manhunters in Lanterns?
In Lanterns Episode 2, John was seen feeding Hal’s wild plant and the bird when an unknown man tased and bound him.
He tried his best to fight his way out after being abducted and thrown into a van, resulting in an epic chase down the road, but he still ended up being taken down.
Later, it was revealed that John was taken by an alien named Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor), who wanted to recruit him. Antaan then explained the truth about the Manhunters to the rookie Green Lantern.
Existing before the Green Lanterns, the Manhunters are synthetic creatures capable of embedding themselves in any species, building advanced technology, and raining down destruction on the worlds they inhabit in the name of what they call “justice.”
When the Manhunters left Antaan’s world, one stayed behind and disguised itself as one of his people while secretly carrying out a holocaust.
Antaan then showed John what the Manhunters had done to his people using what appeared to be a ray gun. Hal later arrived after Antaan’s people had been killed and took the Manhunter into his custody for execution.
However, Antaan believed the sole surviving Manhunter was still alive and hiding in Rushville, suspecting that Hal might have been protecting the creature.
Since Antaan and his people can’t enter the town without being detected, thanks to William’s alien detector, he tasked John with identifying the Manhunter within 48 hours.
In DC Comics, the Manhunters were also developed by the Guardians of the Universe as the galaxy’s first line of defense before the Green Lanterns were created. However, they didn’t work as expected.
Being deadly machines with no empathy, the Manhunters eventually turned against the Guardians of the Universe and left a path of destruction across the cosmos. As a result, the Guardians destroyed them and replaced them with the Green Lantern Corps, with the latter being based on the Emotional Spectrum to address the Manhunters’ fundamental design flaw.
The episode also revealed that a Manhunter actually killed Abin Sur, the original owner of Hal’s ring. That said, fans may know and finally see the Manhunters as Lanterns contune.
