Showrunners Damon Lindelof, Tom King, and Chris Mundy talk about the shocking cliffhanger in which a major character dies in the premiere episode of Lanterns.

So, as many fans are puzzled by what happened, is there a chance to reverse the character’s death in the remaining seven episodes?

Lanterns Showrunners Address Episode 1’s Major Cliffhanger

Lanterns Episode 1 ended with the unexpected death of Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) after John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) found him lifeless and frozen in Rushville, Nebraska, where the shooting incident involving an alien took place.
As this came as a surprise to many, with fans believing Hal would be one of the major characters throughout the season given his live-action debut in the DCU, will he be resurrected?
By the looks of it, his death is permanent, giving John the opportunity to lead the series.
“It focuses the show on John,” Lindelof told Entertainment Weekly. “And although the show is called Lanterns and it is a buddy-cop construct, when you leave these episodes you’re going to be leaving them with John Stewart. We want you to get your brains around that. We want you to know it coming in.”
With Hal’s death in the first episode, the showrunners want the audience to clearly see “where the show is willing to go” and what they’re “willing to do” to make that clear.
The team also explained that Hal had to be the one to die to create a major mystery and emotional conflict.
“If [Hal] did die, there’d be huge, significant emotional stakes, especially if he died at a time when his relationship with John was unresolved,” Lindelof added.
Is Hal’s Death the End of His Lanterns’ Story?

The introduction of Hal Jordan in Lanterns marks the first time fans have seen the character in live-action again since Ryan Reynolds played the role in the heavily derided 2011 movie Green Lantern.
But with his sudden death, does this mean it will also be the end of his story in the HBO series? For Damon Lindelof, the veteran, grizzled version of the character could still be part of Lanterns, as his presence remains a major part of the narrative even after his death.
“We started talking about the movie Ghost and how Patrick Swayze dies very early in act one, but you still get this incredible love story between him and Demi [Moore] that’s largely happening after, and you know that he’s not gonna come back to life,” he explained.
With the show featuring three different timelines – 1996, 2006, and 2026 – it establishes the possibility of Hal appearing in flashbacks during his earlier years and career.
It’s also worth noting that Hal has died before in the comics, with Green Lantern: Rebirth hinting at the possibility of his resurrection.
So, as Chris Mundy stressed that killing Hal off “wasn’t without precedent that we were messing with,” Tom King teased that Hal’s death and the disappearance of his Power Ring just “raise the stakes” of the series in a big way – though they couldn’t deny that the loss of the Green Lantern “has consequences that reverberate throughout the rest of the universe for a long time.”
Lanterns Episode 1 is now available to stream on HBO Max while new episodes drop every Sunday.
