In an interview with SFX Magazine, Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy explained how the upcoming DCU series will connect to Man of Tomorrow, and whether there will be larger complications with how the first season would end.

As we already know, Aaron Pierre is expected to reprise the role of John Stewart in the Superman sequel, which is currently in production.

The showrunner shared that DC Studios gave them free rein on how they would end the story of the first season, but they believe that John Stewart's journey landed in a satisfying manner that would make his Man of Tomorrow appearance seamless.

"We weren’t tasked with having any specific landing point, which was great for us because it gave us freedom to land the story where we wanted to land the story," Mundy said.

"But John will be part of the greater DC Universe. That was good for us to know. And where we land him is somewhere that they’re happy with us landing him and somewhere they can take him, if they want."

While we don't know yet whether John Stewart's role in Man of Tomorrow will be major or not, Lanterns will pave the way for them to explore and focus on the character and make him a more significant character in the DCU moving forward, especially since he will cross paths with Superman and other heroes on the big screen next year.

What Is Lanterns About?

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Paul Ben-Victor, Laura Linney, and Paula Patton.

The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta V. Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.
