Lanterns Episode 1 spans three different decades: 1996, 2016, and 2026.

It all starts in 1996, revealing John’s difficult upbringing and his admiration for Hal as the sole Green Lantern from Earth, despite his father’s disapproval.

John’s father actively trains him to become a Green Lantern in the future, with the bullet holes on the wall hinting that he went through the same brutal drill growing up, with his father repeatedly shooting near his head.

Hal reveals that he was asked only one question before becoming a Green Lantern – the same question John’s father asks him: “Are you afraid?”

The main story then jumps to 2016, when the Rushville mystery begins. Hal is already training John to become the next Green Lantern, but things take a dark turn when they are forced to visit Rushville, Nebraska, after a shooting incident at a sporting event convinces Hal that alien activity may be involved.

The story then jumps to 2026, with John returning to Rushville and reuniting with the local sheriff (Kelly Macdonald).

When they return to the crime scene from 2016, they find Hal sitting in the football stadium, covered in snow and frozen.

John tries to find Hal’s Green Lantern ring, but it is gone. The premiere ends with Hal’s apparent death, just after his DCU debut, signaling a major change for the franchise.

Lanterns

Hal’s surprising death in Lanterns Episode 1 raises two major questions in the DCU: Who killed him, and what happened to his ring?

But considering this is only Hal’s DCU debut and the series is just getting started, he may not be really dead at all.

In DC Comics, when a Green Lantern dies, their ring quickly seeks out a new worthy wearer.

With Hal’s ring nowhere to be found, it raises questions about what really happened to him. Someone could have killed Hal and taken his ring, or he may have been caught without it, leaving him defenseless.

So with Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) being seen in prison in the Lanterns trailer, he could potentially be involved in Hal’s death and the disappearance of his ring.

However, having someone kill Hal and steal his ring would be a major departure from the comics. It’s therefore possible that the corpse John and the sheriff discover isn’t actually Hal and could instead belong to an alien connected to the events of 2016.

James Gunn previously stated that death will have lasting consequences in the DCU.

“In the DCU if you die, you’re dead,” he posted on Threads. “I wouldn’t mind using the Lazarus Pit (and/or resurrection) in a story. But it would have to be a part of the story itself. I won’t be killing major characters just to pop them in the old LP to be alive again.”

Despite this, comic book readers know that Hal has died and returned in DC Comics.

Whether Lanterns will follow a similar path remains to be seen. The series is only getting started, and there are still plenty of mysteries surrounding Hal’s fate that need to be answered.

Lanterns is now streaming on HBO, with new episodes dropping every Monday.
