One of the many MCU films that are currently on its way is Thunderbolts, which will feature a team-up of some of the beloved characters from past films and TV shows such as Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova. The film is currently slated for release in theaters next year.
However, with the uncertainty that is happening right now in the industry due to the impact of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, there have been questions about whether the film will still move forward to production this summer.
Marvel Studios is Delaying the Filming of Thunderbolts
Now, according to Deadline, Marvel Studios has decided to delay the filming of Thunderbolts which was supposed to start in three weeks in Atlanta. The crew was notified about the decision yesterday.
The plan right now is to resume filming once the strike is over. However, there is uncertainty right now about when the strike will finish since formal negotiations have not resumed yet between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
This move comes as the studio also decided to halt the pre-production for Blade a few weeks ago which was supposed to start filming by the end of the month.
Prior to the strike, Marvel Studios hired Beef creator Lee Sung Jin to rewrite the script for the film although it is unknown whether he was able to accomplish all the necessary work before the strike officially commenced.
In case you didn't know, during the strike, writers are not allowed to do any work or appear on set to do rewriters. Marvel is known for their continuous reshaping of the script during filming and they might not want to risk not having the presence of a writer on set.
What is the Status of the Other MCU Projects?
The report also revealed that Marvel Studios is halting the production of the Wonder Man TV series, which has already been filming for weeks prior to the shutdown. The plan is to also resume once the strike is over.
Meanwhile, filming is still ongoing for Captain America: New World Order, which started last March. Deadpool 3 also recently started filming in London although, due to the strike, Ryan Reynolds won't be able to improvise his lines.
It sounds like the studio is taking a case-by-case basis on whether the production of their several projects is going to be affected by the strike or not.
At the end of the day, the most important part is that the writers will be able to reach a fair deal with the studios and have their concerns addressed.
We should be hearing more news and updates about the impact of the strike on the MCU projects in the coming weeks or months depending on how long it will go.
