The Acolyte episode 8 ended on a cliffhanger that warranted a second-season continuation. While Lucasfilm has recently pulled the plug on the series' future on Disney Plus, a new report surfaced revealing that there were actual plans for a season 2 renewal, after all.
Lucasfilm Reportedly Had Plans For The Acolyte Season 2 Before it Got Canned
The Acolyte was canceled on August 19, which renders any potential plans for its return to the streaming service null and void. Although fans are not happy about it, Lucasfilm appears to be moving in a different direction for the franchise.
To think that the series had the opportunity to explore more stories of the early waves of the Sith, Star Wars has seemingly missed out on its chance to dig deeper into The Acolyte's history.
However, according to a new report, Lucasfilm actually had plans for a season 2 prior to its cancellation news.
Apparently, The Acolyte had a "soft greenlight" to claim a season 2 and Lucasfilm was "putting together a season 2 writers room back in February" along with showrunner Leslye Headland.
The project had been "quietly inquiring about the interest level" and "availability of directors as recently as last month."
Considering that the finale left fans with Osha (played by Amandla Stenberg) and Qimir aka The Stranger (Manny Jacinto) with a vague ending for season 1, there was no doubt that a season 2 would be in order.
In fact, even when Headland was casting doubts over the possibilities of The Acolyte season 2, she hinted that the continuation story could explore "the freedom [The Stranger wants] on a second level."
While they initially planned on only having one run on The Acolyte, Headland did express interest that a season 2 could have "episodes that fans would want to have answered."
If anything, should The Acolyte season 2 eventually come to fruition, the crew would have thought of "four to five major mysteries and plot points that have to get hit" upon returning on Disney Plus.
