The Acolyte star Jodie Turner-Smith recently called out Disney for failing to protect the cast from online toxic fans.
The High Republic-set Star Wars series was unceremoniously canceled by Lucasfilm after airing its first season due to low viewership and divisive reception from fans and critics.
It also does not help that the cast has been the subject of hate and attack from online toxic fans as they accused the series of being "woke." It is not the first time that actors in Star Wars have experienced such a situation.
Jodie Turner-Smith Calls Out Disney for Not Protecting The Acolyte Cast
In a recent interview, Turner-Smith addressed the backlash that The Acolyte cast has been receiving from toxic fans.
She called out Disney for failing to protect them from the hatred that they've received online.
"They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting f*cking dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullsh*t. It’s just not fair to not say anything. It’s really unfair," the actress said.
"It would just be nice if the people that have all the money were showing their support and putting their feet down. Say this is unacceptable: ‘You’re not a fan if you do this.’ Make a really big statement and just see if any money leaves."
Turner-Smith continued, "I bet you it won’t, because people of color, and especially Black people, make up a very large percentage of buying power. They might find that it’s actually more lucrative for them, but everyone’s using ‘woke’ like it’s a dirty word."
The actress made some right points as we also saw how Lucasfilm did not release any statement while the cast was being attacked online. Amandla Stenberg notably released a song in response to the hate that she received.
Some fans would also argue that the toxic fans' backlash may have also affected the series' reception in general and perhaps the decision to cancel the series despite having plans for a second season.
