A new report revealed that the production of The Acolyte went over budget as its final costs skyrocketed beyond the supposed numbers.

Last month, we learned the unfortunate news that the High Republic-set Star Wars series has been canceled and won't be moving forward with a second season. A lot of fans were dismayed by Lucasfilm's decision.

Since then, there have been petitions online that would hopefully convince Disney and Lucasfilm to reverse their decision. There is also publishing content related to the series that is still expected to be released next year.

According to a report, Disney disclosed in their recent financial statement that The Acolyte went over budget during its production.

The show's final costs ended up hitting $230.1 million. Previous reports stated that it was originally budgeted at $180 million for the eight-episode season.

With its polarizing reception, disappointing viewership, and, as we learned now, costly production, this might explain why Lucasfilm decided to pull the plug on the series.

While it might be disappointing for many fans that the show's story won't be continued, there are also business aspects that Lucasfilm considers whenever they decide on the future of their projects.

The divisive reception during its release last summer might not have given them the confidence to give the series a chance to tell its next chapter and, rather than spending more money again, they pulled the plug and The Acolyte joined the list of many shows that only ran for a single season.

It remains to be seen whether Lucasfilm will address some of the cliffhangers in the first season finale in another content or it will simply remain unresolved.
