James Gunn’s Superman may be the launching pad for the new DC Universe (DCU), but it’s also filled with Easter eggs and references that pay homage to DC Comics’ lore and previous films about the Man of Steel.
Though the movie serves as a hard reboot of Kal-El’s story, now played by David Corenswet, it presents a DCU where the protagonist is already an established superhero in Metropolis.
From fun nods to the past to hints at the franchise’s future, here’s your ultimate guide to the DC Easter eggs and references in Superman.
All-Star Superman’s Superman Robots and Alan Tudyk’s Voice
Superman features several Superman Robots that serve as caretakers of the Fortress of Solitude.
If their design looks familiar, it’s because they’re heavily inspired by Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman comic series.
And since Alan Tudyk has voiced multiple animated characters in the DCU’s Creature Commandos, including Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface, he also lends his voice to Superman Robot #4, who’s named Gary at his own request.
LuthorCorp Instead of LexCorp
If you’re one of the many wondering why Superman uses “LuthorCorp” instead of “LexCorp” for Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) company, it’s actually a deliberate reference to the CW series Smallville.
In the show, Michael Rosenbaum portrayed a young Lex Luthor and the actor himself happens to be a longtime collaborator and friend of Gunn.
John Williams’ Iconic Superman Theme
Superman’s score includes the nostalgic and iconic motifs from John Williams’ original 1978 Superman theme.
The tune is used in multiple ways, subtly woven into key emotional scenes and evoking a strong sense of nostalgia.
As this homage connects the new film to the classic Superman legacy, it serves as a fitting tribute to a timeless classic that can’t be beaten.
Gotham City Sign
Superman confirms that Metropolis and Gotham City are neighboring cities.
During the evacuation scene, a highway sign points to Gotham City—an element that’s true to the comics, where the two cities are often depicted as being close to each other.
With Superman and Batman revealed as neighbors, will a crossover happen soon?
Classic Superman Moments
Gunn didn’t forget to pay homage to the classic Superman, adding several key moments from the original film to his new iteration.
One great example is when Superman catches a falling helicopter and stops a train. The 2025 Superman also features classic-style opening credits, similar to those in the first movie directed by the great Richard Donner.
In addition, Luthor’s premature declaration of victory near the end of the film also appears to be inspired by the late Gene Hackman’s take on the villain in the 1978 movie.
Milly Alcock’s Debut as Supergirl
Milly Alcock has officially made her debut as Supergirl in Superman.
After Superman’s climactic battle and his return to the Fortress of Solitude, a loud crash was heard—and Kara Zor-El arrived drunk.
Kara was looking for her dog, Krypto, who had accompanied Superman throughout the movie.
Showing her rebellious and playful side, this moment gives a glimpse of what fans can expect from the upcoming Supergirl film in 2026.
