James Gunn has set the record straight on the financial goal of Superman and the rumors surrounding its budget.
The new film will mark the official debut of the new DCU and introduce a new Man of Steel for the current generation. There have been assumptions and speculations that the film's box office performance may affect the future of DC in the coming years.
Does Superman Need to Gross $700 Million to Not Flop at the Box Office?
Speaking with GQ, Gunn addressed the rumors that Superman needs to gross around $700 million to be called a box office success.
For months, there have been speculations from analysts and industry experts regarding the financial goal of the DCU film and the metric that it should achieve to call it a box office performance smash.
"Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be," the director said.
"They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying."
David Corenswet also explained that the film is "not the riskiest endeavor in the world" as some are presuming it to be.
According to box office projections, Superman is on track to earn around $125–145 million at the domestic box office this weekend in North America. If it ends up happening, it will surpass the debut of Man of Steel ($116 million).
