Despite the “woke” accusations and several negative criticisms (even before its release) James Gunn’s Superman is now receiving rave audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans have been eagerly waiting to see how the hard reboot, which kicks off the restart of the DC Universe (DCU) that replaces the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), would perform on the review-aggregation site amid all the backlash, including calls for boycotts after the director referred to Kal-El as an “immigrant” and described the film as an “American story.”

So, what does viewers feel about Superman?

What is Superman’s Rotten Tomatoes Score?

Superman is “Verified Hot” on Rotten Tomatoes with its nearly perfect audience score of 96% as of this writing.

It has garnered over 1,000 Verified Ratings and currently holds the highest audience score among all Superman movies.

In fact, Zack Snyder’s Justice League now comes second with a 92% viewer rating, followed by the Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman: The Movie with 86%.

For Alfredo, Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel is the real “Superman movie!”

Sarah B added that the filmmaker managed to stick to the original “DC kitsch” while adding a modern twist to the Superman mythology.

She also praised Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Lex Luthor. While she admitted that no one could surpass Gene Hackham’s taken on the villain, she claimed Hoult was a “great” one.

In addition, Van found the film very “comic book … in a good way.” It immerses viewers in a “whole new world” full of established characters and lore. Though it might feel overwhelming at first, he explained, it would be a “wonder to behold” as it unfolded.

“The action scenes felt dynamic, the acting was good all across the board, and the portrayal of Superman was particularly inspiring,” he described. “Although the pacing was a bit fast and I wanted more time for some emotional moments and characters, overall Superman was a fun, hopeful ride into a magical new universe.”

However, it’s worth noting that the audience score may change once the movie is widely released to the public on Friday, July 11.

Superman serves as the launching pad for Gunn and his co-DC Studios CEO Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.

The DC bosses aim to bring the franchise’s legendary characters back to their roots with fresh storytelling and a clean slate.

But while the film also has negative reviews, with some saying it’s overstuffed and lacking in depth, there’s no denying that the positive reception outweighs the criticism.

That said, it marks a promising start for the franchise that could influence the direction of future DC projects.

With Gunn at the helm, his signature blend of humor, heart, and style may be just what the superhero genre needs for a renaissance.
