It's been ten years now since the fifth installment was released. To this day, fans are still wondering whether the franchise will be revived or rebooted with a new actor. In a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Matt Damon confirmed that a fifth Jason Bourne movie is currently in development with director Edward Berger.

While he has expressed excitement in reprising his iconic role in the next installment, he noted that he would only commit to the project if the script delivers a fresh take on the franchise.

"I'm talking to a great director named Ed Berger. He did All Quiet on the Western Front. He's a wonderful director, and we're talking about it. We're just trying to figure out. We're trying to nail the story down because I'd love to do it," the actor said.

"It's just that thing where, you know, if we do it, we want it to be like the first three. And it's tough because it's not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission, and people can even change the character, you know, the person playing Bond. It's a linear story, so it makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you're giving people what they want but also enough new stuff. It's a tricky one."

This is an exciting update for fans who have been looking forward to seeing more of Jason Bourne on the big screen, and not only that, Damon is indeed reprising the role if it ends up moving forward.

For now, stay tuned for news and updates in the coming months regarding the future of the Jason Bourne franchise, and hopefully, it will become official sooner rather than later.

The History of the Bourne Franchise

The five-film Bourne franchise is a critical and commercial powerhouse, grossing over $1.6 billion and fundamentally reshaping modern action cinema. The series became famous for establishing a gritty, post-9/11 tone, pioneering the widespread use of frenetic editing and shaky-cam cinematography that heavily influenced Hollywood action movies throughout the late 2000s and 2010s.

While Doug Liman launched the franchise by directing The Bourne Identity, Paul Greengrass defined its signature aesthetic by helming The Bourne SupremacyThe Bourne Ultimatum, and Jason Bourne. Tony Gilroy served as the franchise's narrative backbone, writing or co-writing every entry except for the fifth film.

At the heart of the overarching plot is Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin suffering from dissociative amnesia, portrayed by Matt Damon. He starred as the title character in four of the five installments.

The sole exception is the fourth film, The Bourne Legacy, which Gilroy also directed. When Damon chose not to return for this chapter, the narrative shifted to a new protagonist: Aaron Cross, a Department of Defense operative played by Jeremy Renner. In Legacy, Cross is forced to run for his life due to the systemic fallout of Bourne's exposure of the black-ops programs in Ultimatum.

Although Damon does not physically appear in this specific film, his character's presence is felt throughout through name drops and photographs, setting the stage for Damon's eventual return in the fifth movie.
