DC Studios is now gearing up for its next DC Universe movie, Supergirl. After being introduced at the end of Superman as she retrieves her dog, Krypto the Superdog, from her cousin, fans are about to see the new generation’s Girl of Steel, Kara Zor-El, in her own movie.
With House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock in the lead, here’s everything you need to know about Supergirl.
What is Supergirl About?

Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s eight-issue comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the standalone Supergirl follows Kara as she becomes lost and wanders across the cosmos after feeling like she’s losing her purpose.
Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman is now thriving on his own, and he no longer needs Kara’s protection. But just as she feels like giving up, a young and noble galactic warrior named Rutheye Marye Knoll asks for her help to find the culprits behind her father’s murder and the destruction of her home.
"She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn't help her, she'll do it herself, whatever the cost," the comic's official synopsis reads. "Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core."
However, in January 2023, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter that his version of Supergirl would be darker and more complex.
"We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth," he said. "She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we're used to."
Who’s in the Cast of Supergirl?

Alcock leads Supergirl, with Gunn believing she perfectly captured screenwriter Ana Nogueira and comic book creators King and Evely’s vision of the character.
He later revealed that he actually recommended her for the role to his DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, trusting she could bring the “edge, grace, and authenticity” needed for the DCU’s version of the character.
This left Alcock herself in disbelief that she was chosen as Supergirl, admitting she was even scared during the screen test process.
"You're in a room with all the other women [vying for the same part] and you’re all dressed as the character. [The studio] will get you lined up in the makeup truck and put the same makeup on you all and then test you on a stage," she told Elle Australia. "For Supergirl, it was myself and another girl. It was really scary; I thought I was going to vomit! But it's just fear! That's what happens! This job has been a journey of overcoming my own fear."
In addition to Alcock, the cast also includes Eve Ridley as Rutheye and Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.
David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham also join the film as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, respectively, alongside Jason Momoa as Lobo, the alien mercenary and bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia.
How Supergirl Fits into the DCU?

The second main film in the DCU, Superman and Supergirl share the same universe but have different stories and tones.
Supergirl is expected to introduce the cosmic side of the DCU and expand its alien civilizations and interplanetary politics.
In addition, with the introduction of Lobo, the film may set up the character for future crossovers. And of course, with her own movie, it will establish Kara as an independent character.
When Supergirl will be Released?
Supergirl will mark the character’s first major movie appearance since the 1984 film starring Helen Slater.
After completing production in the UK and Scotland between January and May 2025, the film is slated for release on June 26, 2026.
