Spider-Man: Far from Home Director Likens Mysterio to a 'Cool Uncle'

After the Vulture, Spider-Man is set to go up against Mysterio in the sequel Far from Home. While Mysterio is originally a villain in the comics, he's coming out to be one of the good guys in the movie, and as it turns out, SHIELD has hired him to work with Peter Parker when it comes to stopping the so-called "Elementals."

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Jon Watts described Jake Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck as having a sort of close relationship when it comes to Peter Parker. Watts explains, "If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle."

Though Mysterio is shown to be a hero in this movie, a lot of people who know him from the comics are already sure that he's actually the guy behind the Elementals, and he's pulling a Syndrome (from The Incredibles) to get all the fame and attention. I guess he's pretty good since he actually has SHIELD convinced that he's one of the good guys as well.

With his relationship to Peter revealed, I can't help but think this is going to turn out like Miles Morales and his uncle from Into the Spider-Verse. Peter will find a new mentor in Beck, and will be heartbroken when it's revealed he was the villain this whole time. With these new Spider-Man films having an emphasis on Peter coming of age, I think it would be a great hurdle for him to get over. Watts did have to say this about his character arc in the film:

"Peter's ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least… This film is about the world telling him, ‘It's time for you to step up and grow up, kid,' and he's saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.'"
