Simon Kinberg Takes Responsibility For Dark Phoenix Box Office Flop

Dark Phoenix might be the last X-Men film that will be released by 20th Century Fox but that doesn't mean it was a roaring success. Unfortunately, the Sophie Turner film ended up having the lowest opening weekend of any X-Men flick. However, we shouldn't blame any of the stars of the movie for the failure. Director Simon Kinberg has taken responsibility for Dark Phoenix being a box office flop.

Kinberg recently spoke to KCRW about all the trouble that Dark Phoenix had to go through and how it affected the film's overall performance.

The X-Men: First Class producer stated that Dark Phoenix would have done better if it stuck to its original release date in November 2018. In addition to that, Kinberg cited the success of Avengers: Endgame as a possible factor. Nevertheless, he still insisted that he is the only one to blame.

"It clearly is a movie that didn't connect with audiences that didn't see it; it didn't connect enough with audiences that did see it. So that's on me ... I'm saying when a movie doesn't work, put it on me. I'm the writer-director. The movie didn't connect with audiences. That's on me," Kinberg said.

Dark Phoenix only made $32.8 million on its opening weekend and people continue to criticize the film for its confusing storyline and plot holes. Unfortunately, it's too late for Kinberg to do anything about all that and it looks like fans will have to wait until Disney reboots the X-Men to see if the franchise will still work in the future.

You can still watch Dark Phoenix for yourself as it is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
