Marvel Studios has already found a frontrunner for the director of the highly-anticipated MCU team-up film Avengers 5.

Following the exit of Destin Daniel Cretton and the firing of Jonathan Majors as the MCU's Kang last year, the project has undergone massive retooling and the studio has been searching for a new director who will take over the project.

Several names have been rumored for the job, but Marvel Studios has not confirmed any of them. Given the massive scale of the film, fans are hoping that a talented filmmaker will be tapped to helm the project and now it looks like we finally know who the top choice is.

Avengers 5 Director Frontrunner Revealed

A recent report has revealed that Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is Marvel Studios' current top choice to direct Avengers 5.

Levy has been given the latest draft of the script by Michael Waldron, but he has not responded to the offer. While waiting for his decision, Marvel is also meeting with other directors.

There is no guarantee yet that Levy will end up taking the job due to his busy schedule since he is also involved in other projects such as the final season of Stranger Things and his untitled Star Wars movie.

Avengers 5 is set to be one of the largest Marvel productions to date as they are planning to bring back 60 MCU cast members including Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, and Karen Gillian.

The story also remains under wraps at the moment in the aftermath of Majors' firing as Kang the Conqueror and the removal of "The Kang Dynasty" in the title.

The potential hiring of Levy as the director of Avengers 5 is a promising sign for Deadpool and Wolverine since it is an indication that Marvel Studios is very happy with his work for the film and they want to collaborate with him in other projects.

Levy has also shown through his past works that he is a great studio movie director and, with Deadpool and Wolverine, he also has the capability now to helm a project with a multiverse-level scale which is fitting for Avengers 5.

For now, let's wait and see whether Levy ends up signing on to the project, but it is an exciting prospect for fans who have been eagerly waiting for an update.

Avengers 5 is currently slated for release in theaters on May 1, 2026.
