Robert Downey Jr. finally explains how his grand Doctor Doom return came to fruition in the first place. Considering the divisive fan reception RDJ's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe generated, here's what you need to know about how he landed his Victor Von Doom role.

"Come Back As What?" Kevin Feige Pitched How RDJ Could Return to Marvel

At the San Diego Comic-Con this year, Marvel hoisted Robert Downey Jr. on their roster to come back as Doctor Victor von Doom, presumably as a Tony Stark aka Iron Man variant who had to play with the switcheroo concept in the original comic books. How did that happen?

RDJ explained that he and Feige have "kept in touch" all these years and that he had an idea "outside of the cinematic universe", one that involved installations for the Disney parks' attractions.

While he initially hoped to share some insights on "location-based entertainment", Feige suggested he was coming up with ideas on how RDJ could "come back", which Downey Jr.'s wife, Susan, questioned, "Wait, come back as what?"

Feige then goes, "Let's get Victor von Doom right. Let's get that right."

Considering that Doctor Doom is an essential part of the Marvel villainry outside the Fantastic Four franchise, it does make sense to put him in the spotlight as an overarching big bad for the new Avengers team in the future.

However, Downey Jr. did have doubts about the concept, at first. So he sought after Iger's thoughts on the idea first before he could jump on board with it. Despite his reservations about his MCU return as Doctor Doom, Iger told him, "I like it."

It was then and there that Robert Downey Jr. realized that the creative decision "disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about [Marvel's big boss] Kevin Feige."

While MCU fans remain conflicted about seeing Iron Man return, needless to say, RDJ doesn't seem to mind taking another whack at being a villain in the comic book franchise, specifically, in Avengers: Doomsday.
