It's no secret that Matt Reeves' The Batman is set in a completely different universe, different from what the DCEU built over the years. At long last, Reeves has an official name to call his The Batman universe.
Robert Pattinson's Batman Universe Officially Hails a Name
The Batman director's expansion plans for the franchise continue to swerve from the internal DCU.
In this case, we'll be seeing beyond Robert Pattinson's 2022 Dark Knight film by watching Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin in the new series debuting in September on HBO and Max.
There are other yet-to-be-announced spinoffs in the saga (which may unfortunately not include Prime's Batman: Caped Crusader), which leads fans to question what 'universe' should Reeves' Batman stories be called.
"Batman Epic Crime Saga," is what the director claimed to have been using with his producing partner Dylan Clark during their plans of launching movies and shows based on Pattinson's lead.
"As we were writing the movie [The Batman], I was like, 'Hey, you know what? I think there are some cool shows that we could do,'" Reeves added this was the reason why they made their deal at Warner Bros. in the first place.
For now, the closest project branching off from The Batman is The Penguin, which lead writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc describes as "a Scarface story."
The mini-series follows the events of The Batman before setting off to what The Batman 2 has in store. This time, "Oz" is dealing with the repercussions left by his boss Carmine Falcone in Gotham City after the Riddler's attack.
According to LeFranc, The Penguin will be seeing the "rise-to-power story of Oz" where fans get to see what it's like "living in the underbelly of the city."
"Oz is a mover and a shaker. He can't always be trusted," the lead writer continued, "He's very smart and very methodical, but he's also extremely impulsive. You can't predict what he's going to do."
