The first Joker film was pretty sparing when it came to cameos of any other famous Gotham character. Besides Joker, fans only got Bruce Wayne, Alfred, and Thomas Wayne.
With Joker: Folie a Deux introducing Harley Quinn though, it does seem like more familiar characters from Batman’s rogues gallery are going to be appearing, and fans have spotted a tease for one dual-sided lawyer.
Harvey Dent/Two-Face Easter Egg in Latest Joker 2 Trailer
While the major plot of Joker: Folie a Deux has been kept under wraps, it does look like the film is going to be featuring the trial of Arthur Fleck; and where there’s a courtroom drama, fans are already expecting the appearance of one of comics’ most infamous lawyers.
What’s interesting is, there is actually an Easter Egg for Harvey Dent/Two-Face in the latest trailer—but it can only be spotted by turning on the closed captions. If you turn on the subtitles, they will confirm that one of the speakers on the radio condemning Joker is actually Harvey.
On the radio, Harvey says, “They believe Arthur Fleck to be some kind of martyr. Well, he’s not. He’s a monster.”
It hasn’t been confirmed who could be playing Dent in the movie, but rumors suggest that he could be played by Harry Lawtey. But since Lawtey is a bit on the young side, it’s possible that Dent could be played by someone in their middle age.
Joker’s History with Two-Face
Though Joker and Two-Face don’t really have an intimate history in the comics, the two were paired up as the villains of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. In that film, Dent is a lawyer who works closely with Batman to catch Joker, but after he gets horribly scarred, it’s Joker who pushes Dent to snap and start exacting his own justice on corrupt cops.
Harvey Dent also appears in the original Batman played by Billy Dee Williams, but he doesn’t really have any significant scene with Joker; he doesn’t even get to become Two-Face in that continuity (but he does in Batman ’89 comic).
There have also been discussions that Jim Carrey’s Riddler in Batman Forever was closer to Joker’s characterization; and he was paired with Two-Face in that film; then again this was a time when the villains really embraced the more wacky side of their characters.
Two-Face in Folie a Deux
With the first movie already showing the origin of this universe’s Batman, it’s possible that this movie could also serve as an origin for Two-Face. The trailer makes it clear that Dent is against Joker in this film, and with him having a crowd of supporters, it’s very likely that one of them could throw acid on Dent’s face in or outside the courtroom—copying his origin from The Long Halloween.
With director Todd Phillips willing to change comic origins as he does with Joker and Harley, maybe Dent could have a different story with Folie a Deux. It would definitely be a curveball if he’s scarred when the movie starts.
Joker: Folie a Deux is set to release in theatres on Oct. 4.
