Stan Lee and The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Stan Lee may not have a cameo in the first foray of Marvel’s family in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but The Fantastic Four: First Steps has its own way of keeping the late iconic comic-book writer’s legacy alive.

Lee used to appear in every movie adaptation of his creations, but that sadly stopped upon his death in 2018. His last appearance was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which he filmed before his passing.

So, while there’s no chance that fans will see him again, a new comic honors the man behind the Marvel Universe.

How Can Stan Lee Appear in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

Created by Matt Fraction and Mark Buckingham, The Fantastic Four: First Step #1 keeps Lee’s legacy alive by featuring subtle yet significant tributes woven into the story.

Compared to a cameo, making the renowned publisher part of the tale is more meaningful and permanent.

One great example is naming the ship that carried the Fantastic Four into space for their first journey The Excelsior.

For starters, this phrase is known as Lee’s iconic catchphrase—a word he famously used to end his columns and interviews.

Excelsior is a Latin term that means “ever upward” or “higher,” Lee’s way of encouraging people to strive for greater things.

The comic also introduces “Rocket City, USA,” a vibrant scientific hub where Reed Richards and the entire group work in a place where “Earth’s brightest and best gather to share ideas.”

These ideas are brought to life with the help of genius investors, much like Lee’s own vision of creating Marvel Comics—ultimately becoming a collaborative space where imaginative ideas were born and shared with millions

What is The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 Comics About?

The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 features the “State-of-the-Art Cosmic Radiation Monitor,” where Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing) are monitored after gaining their powers.

This alludes to the scientific origins of their abilities and creation. As they self-quarantine, the team finally has time to learn more about themselves and their powers without endangering the public.

At one point, Ben tells Reed that he may be the “smartest guy in the world, but he still hasn’t figured out that he can’t control everything.”

So, in addition to the names and ideas, the comic’s theme is also inspired by Lee himself, with its classic touch of humor and humility—making it even more poignant that he created these relatable heroes in the first place.

Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 is now available, while the Fantastic Four: First Steps movie is set to premiere on July 25.
