Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse proved that audiences were ready for some alternate universe storylines, and Marvel Studios is going to be doing just that with Disney's streaming service. Besides all the upcoming miniseries based on Vision and Loki, we're also getting an animated miniseries based on the What If storylines.
According to /Film, What If will be an anthology show which will explore alternate MCU timelines based on the change of one story element. Think DC's Elseworlds, but for Marvel. One episode is said to be adapting the story of one comic that asks ‘What if Loki was the one who found Thor's hammer?'
While I think there's an abundance of topics that could be lifted from the comics, I'm hoping there are some stories that will be original concepts for the MCU specifically. Sure I would be into What If Captain America Didn't Vanish in World War II, but how about stories like What if Edgar Wright Directed Ant-Man or What If Captain Marvel Actually had an Emotional Arc. I'm sure fans would go crazy over What If James Gunn Directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Since the series is animated, there's also a lot of potentials for original MCU actors to reprise their roles for the show. I'm just hoping that they up the ante when it comes to animation. I'm all up for multiple types of animation styles, but I'm hoping they up the quality more to Young Justice than Avengers Assemble.
No release date has been set for Marvel's What If series.
