Wizards of the Coast has announced the full release slate of the first 2021 Magic: The Gathering set, Kaldheim. The set originally announced during the Zendikar Rising launch event back in September will bring players to a Viking and Norse mythoogy-themed plane in Magic's multiverse, and it will be the second of three expansions to use the new modal double-faced card (MDFC) mechanic, joining Zendikar Rising and the Spring 2021 Harry Potter-esque set, Strixhaven: School of Mages.
The company has revealed the dates for Kaldheim's retail release, prerelease, the entire play season, and other important dates for stores in the Wizards Play Network.
> Season: February 5–April 22 (11 weeks)
> Scheduling Open: October 26
> Distributor Selection Deadline: November 13
> Promo Pack Allocations Set: November 13
> Kits Delivered (North America and Latin America): December 17
> Promo Packs: January 22–28
> Bring-a-Friend Promos Delivered: January 22–28
> Prerelease: January 29–February 4
> Release: February 5
> Launch Party: February 6–February 7
> Friday Night Magic: February 5–April 9
> Commander Nights: February 8–April 15
Wizards noted that these dates represent the best information currently available, "but the situation is fluid". A few weeks ago, Wizards announced in-store play suspension would be extended to January 2021, so I doubt that there will be official prerelease events for Kaldheim.
Following the release of Kaldheim, 2021 will also see the release of exciting Magic sets: Strixhaven: School of Mages, Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in Forgotten Realms, and a dual release of Innistrad: Vampires and Innistrad: Werewolves.
The official preview season for Kaldheim will most likely start sometime in late December 2020 or early January 2021, so expect brand new Viking-inspired cards to be revealed around that time.
