- Quick Answer: James Spader returns as Ultron in VisionQuest, promising a deeper character study inside Vision's mind rather than serving as a plot device.
After more than a decade, the supervillain Ultron is back, and according to James Spader himself, his robotic character’s story in the upcoming MCU series VisionQuest is better than his introduction in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Born in Avengers Tower as a peacekeeping program built by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Ultron later built his own army of sentries in Sokovia.
But just as everyone thought Ultron’s story had ended after Vision (Paul Bettany) disintegrated his last physical vessel, he’s about to play a bigger role in VisionQuest.
What Is Ultron’s Role in VisionQuest?

After Vision killed Ultron’s physical body at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, he secretly uploaded a copy of the AI’s consciousness into a digital prison within his own mind.
This mental space resembles a mansion where other AIs Tony Stark created live, with Ultron appearing in a surprising human form with a beard and long coat in VisionQuest. He also has his traditional robotic body.
So, as many are surprised by his return, James Spader teased that there would be an even bigger and more significant story for Ultron in the Disney+ series than what fans had seen in Age of Ultron.
“Avengers had how many leads, and how much pipe needs to be laid for subsequent movies? And how much respect has to be paid for prior things? Ultron in Age of Ultron was a vehicle for the Avengers story,” he told The Direct.
The actor then compared this to VisionQuest, where the focus would only be on Ultron, Vision, and Thomas (Ruaridh Mollica), the mysterious teenager whose body serves as the physical vessel for the reincarnated Tommy Maximoff (Speed), the son of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision.
“And it’s also, you know, eight episodes, each one a little movie. [Ultron] doesn’t carry that burden, and so all you’re doing is exploring that character and this other character and this other character,” Spader continued.
True enough, with eight episodes running from over 40 minutes to one hour, VisionQuest can explore Ultron’s story even further and reveal what fans have yet to learn about the former Avengers villain.
Is Ultron the Villain in VisionQuest?

Fans are about to see a different kind of Ultron in VisionQuest. After trying to put humanity on the brink of extinction in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he will be more tamed in the new series.
He will be part of the AI group, including FRIDAY, JARVIS, and EDITH, that Vision consults as he tries to navigate the memories White Vision inherited from the original synthezoid in WandaVision.
However, this doesn’t mean that Ultron will no longer be the villain. In fact, he will be the devil on Vision’s shoulder, badly influencing him.
This time, fans are about to see two forms of Ultron: his robot body and his human avatar, allowing them to see more of James Spader on the small screen.
He, too, will continuously use psychological manipulation against Vision, especially since he can’t use his physical strength inside Vision’s mind or pull off feats as he did in Sokovia.
That said, he will be seen carrying out his schemes from inside Vision’s subconscious mind and consciousness, remaining a major threat as he challenges Vision’s understanding of reality and attempts to finish the destructive plan he started in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
VisionQuest premieres on October 14 on Disney+.
