How VisionQuest Will Revisit Tony Stark's Death in Avengers: Endgame
In an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that the upcoming MCU series will revisit Tony Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame.
However, this time around, it will be told from the perspective of Stark's A.I. companion, F.R.I.D.A.Y.
"It brought all these really interesting questions that we get to bring to the surface here when we bring them all together. Like, FRIDAY was there when Tony Stark died. What’s that like for an AI, to not be able to protect the one they’re programmed to protect?" Matalas said.
"I guess the [bigger] question is, are they corporeal? Or are they digital? Are they avatars? Can they be corporeal? Do some characters want to be corporeal? Some definitely do not. But that's a question that the pilot will very quickly answer."
This is an interesting way to bring back F.R.I.D.A.Y. into the fold, given that the MCU has never explored the perspective of an AI character like her, and the theme might resonate today given the rise and concerns surrounding the wide use of AI in our everyday lives.
The series will also feature F.R.I.D.A.Y. in her human form, played by Orla Brady, so they will give a face and body to the voice that we've been hearing when Tony Stark was still around.
What Is VisionQuest About?
VisionQuest follows Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, who is now in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron.
His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son reincarnated. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he's to survive.
The cast includes Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D'Arcy.
The series will premiere on October 14 on Disney+. There are eight episodes in total.
