Director James Gunn has been actively pushing for a Marvel vs DC crossover film for quite some time now and given the fact that he directed both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, it's only natural for him to feel the desire to have characters from both franchises go at it on the big screen and possibly team up, even. This week, news broke out that Gunn has actually pitched the idea of creating a Harley Quinn and Groot film to the powers that be and the internet went absolutely nuts with the potential.
However, Gunn is clarifying initial reports about his supposed Marvel x DC crossover ideas. Taking to Twitter, he pointed out that MCU Direct's report took his recent comments out of context. According to Gunn, he actually approached Marvel and Warner Bros. about a potential MCU-DCEU crossover project, not the Harley and Groot film that was first reported.

The Scooby-Doo screenwriter did confirm that he once spoke to Kevin Feige about a possible crossover film starring Harley and Groot but he said that the pitch never got to either WB or DC Films. The entertainment site's post has since been taken down after Gunn retweeted it. Check it out here:
Harley Quinn and Groot teaming up in a film is music to my ears but I honestly doubt Disney and WB will actually let it happen. And let's be honest, the studio needs to worry about making the DC Extended Universe a lot more consistent before even attempting to do a crossover project with Marvel Studios.
Meanwhile, The Suicide Squad is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on August 5, 2021. It will also be available on the same day on HBO Max.
