Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts recently revealed that they changed their plans for the movie's big reveals due to the Reddit fan theories.
The beloved MCU film became a huge box office sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic, partly due to the surprise returns of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and the villains of their respective Spider-Man movies.
Their appearances were kept secret until the day of the release, and it remains one of the best surprises in the MCU's history.
How Did the Reddit Fan Theories Change the Spider-Man: No Way Home Big Reveals?
In a recent interview with Collider, Watts opened up about how the Reddit fan theories influenced their plans for the big reveals in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
"There had been rumors that Tobey and Andrew were going to be in the movie, and this is while we’re shooting," he explained.
"We were writing the script, and we were working on where we wanted to reveal the guys, and it always seemed like Peter’s going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out. It’s probably a rooftop somewhere. It’s all sort of hazy. You’re still trying to figure it out."
However, the Reddit fan theories prompted them to change their plans for Garfield and Maguire's entrance in the film.
"Then I was on Reddit, and I was looking at people who had already made fan art of, ‘This is probably what it’s going to be like when the two Spider-Men get revealed.’ It was on a rooftop. It was sad, two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men are stepping out," Watts said.
"I was like, Well, we can’t do that. If that’s exactly what everyone thinks we’re going to do, we absolutely can’t do that."
As a result, Watts came up with the idea of introducing Garfield and Maguire instead in Ned's grandmother's house to counter the leaks and theories on Reddit.
What is the Future of Spider-Man in the MCU?
A fourth Spider-Man solo MCU movie is currently in the works, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The plot details are currently under wraps, just like those of any other upcoming MCU project.
The film is expected to begin production this summer ahead of its scheduled release in theaters next year. Destin Daniel Cretton took over the reins as the director.
Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon are all expected to reprise their roles. They are joined by MCU newcomers Sadie Sink and Liza Colon-Zayas, whose roles are currently being kept under wraps.
It was recently confirmed that Jon Bernthal will be making an appearance as The Punisher, making his MCU big-screen debut.
