Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers for Squid Game Season 3.

The final season of Squid Game has finally ended—or has it? The 10-episode third season concluded on a high note, featuring a major cameo by Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett, who appeared to be playing a new recruiter while playing ddakji with a homeless man.

Though this seemed to hint at a spin-off, especially with an American version of Squid Game by David Fincher in the works, could it also be a tease for a possible Squid Game Season 4?

To clear up all the assumptions, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator has finally weighed in on the future of the franchise.

Hwang, who also served as the hit Netflix series’ director, writer, and executive producer, confirmed that the recently released third season marks the end of Squid Game.

“I didn’t end it on that note in order to deliberately leave room for further stories to happen,” he told Esquire.

For starters, Seong Gi-hun, better known as Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), sacrificed himself to save Kim Jun-hee, or Player 222’s (Jo Yu-ri) baby, who ended up being part of the deadly games.

“Gi-hun and the Front Man, through these characters, the Games in Korea have ended,” he continued.

However, that doesn’t mean Dong-hyuk is closing the door on a future Squid Game project.

In fact, in an interview with Variety, Hwang revealed he’s willing to participate if Netflix ever decides to do a show based on his globally popular dystopian series, though it depends on “what kind of show it is.”

“If they wanted to do a following season, then I think it’s obvious I would have to participate and lead.,” he explained. “If Netflix asks and if I feel like my contribution is needed, then as long as it’s not something that would interfere with whatever I’m working on at that time, I would be happy to provide what they need from me.”

So, while the original Squid Game may be finished for Hwang, Netflix seems to have different plans.

The second season of the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge is now in the works, while Fincher is developing a U.S. spin-off.

According to Deadline, it won’t be just a simple remake, but it is set to expand the setting and universe of the story.

But while Hwang is open to working on Squid Game again if Netflix has a new project in mind, it seems he has no intention of being involved in Fincher’s U.S. version of his brainchild.

In the same interview with Variety, he said that “sharing of ideas” would be enough for him and that he had no plans to be “hands-on in a project like that.”

By the looks of it, fans may have already seen the end of Hwang’s Squid Game with the death of Player 456.
