Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett made a cameo appearance in the finale episode of Squid Game.

She showed up during the final moments of the episode, where she played an American recruiter in the streets of downtown Los Angeles.

Blanchett's mysterious character was playing ddakji with a homeless man in an alley while she was being watched by the Front Man in his car. The two exchanged glances before she continued playing with the recruit.

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk explained to Tudum why he decided to cast Blanchett to play the American recruiter in the finale.

"We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing. And as for why Cate Blanchett, she’s just the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn’t love her? So we were very happy to have her appear. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did," he said.

"If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story."

Did the Final Scene Tease the American Version of Squid Game?

It remains unclear whether Blanchett's appearance in the final scene of the episode was a tease of the American version of Squid Game.

Last year, it was reported that David Fincher is developing an English-language version of Squid Game. It is part of Netflix's attempt to expand the franchise.

Hwang has also teased in an interview a few days ago that he is not closing any doors for possibilities of spinoffs.

"Season 3 is indeed a finale, and you’ll be able to feel that once you watch. But I’m not trying to say that I’m going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never," he said.

While we have no clarity yet about the future of the Squid Game franchise, the finale of the main series made it clear that the game has gone international, which gives Netflix more leeway to expand the world on a global scale.
