Carl Grimes' death is undeniably still one of the most heartbreaking moments in The Walking Dead franchise.

The son of Rick and Lori Grimes failed to see the light of day past The Walking Dead season 8 episode 9 titled Honor.

See, despite being one of the longest and most persistent survivors in the series, his demise was caused by the very plague he had long been fighting against.

Before he turns into one of the walker zombies, he dies with Michonne and his father by his side. As much as he deserved to live long enough to reach The Ones Who Live, he didn't.

Unfortunately, Carl Grimes is still dead in the franchise. Considering that The Walking Dead season 8 happened before the events of The Ones Who Live, there would be no other chance of setting Carl again, except in the form of flashbacks.

In this case, we have yet to see Carl make his comeback even in that form in the spinoff series. However, he did leave the franchise and fans something to look forward to.

Carl Grimes does make a small cameo in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live in episode 4. Keep in mind though that he is still dead in this spinoff.

Once Rick and Michonne get some time alone to themselves, she hands over a drawing of Carl that she had gotten from Benjiro's Portraiture and Art booth.

The cowboy hat instantly sends Rick into tears as he recalls the moments he shared with his son in The Walking Dead franchise.

Although the actor Chandler Riggs doesn't return, his montage from the original series doesn't spare fans the heartbreak of one of the franchise's most heartbreaking scenes.

The recent episode, The Ones Who Live episode 2 titled Gone, emulates a similar theme when Rick and Michonne lost Carl in the original series.

While Michonne gets to reunite with the love of her life, she loses her traveling companion Nat in the fight.

However, this time, we get to see Michonne and Rick's tandem in a different light. After coping with the loss of Carl, the spinoff could bring us back to their son's dying wish: ultimately to restore humanity.

They can savor the least bit of humanity within themselves, despite fighting among the walking dead and the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
