Helaena and Rhaenyra

The Battle of Tumbleton finally happened in House of the Dragon Season 3 finale, with several deaths happening here and there as the Targaryen factions got divided.

Rhaenyra did her best to maintain the Iron Throne, brutally fighting for her legitimacy in ruling King’s Landing.

After having Alyn of Hall (Abubakar Salim) kill the High Septon for simply refusing to anoint her, Rhaenyra returned to the Red Keep to find Helaena had died after taking her own life.

She fell from her window and impaled herself below after learning she and her unborn child would forever be Rhaenyra’s hostages.

After seeing her deathless body, Rhaenyra saw the tapestry Helaena was embroidering was filled with images of her reign and her own death, threw it to the ground, and shut the window down before closing the season finale.

“I think her death sort of condemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen,” Emma D’Arcy told ScreenRant about Helaena’s death. “I think there’s no way back after that. There’s certainly no route back to a kind of more moderate form of leadership.”

Rhaenyra

With Helaena’s death, it looks like Rhaenyra will find it difficult to redeem herself in House of the Dragon Season 4.

Rhaenyra is evidently embracing more brutal ways as she continues her pursuit of power, leaning into violence and its consequences instead of condemning her own actions.

No matter the cost, she’s willing to do everything she can to secure and maintain her position as queen.

Helaena’s death will also permanently ruin her relationship with Alicent (Olivia Cooke), leaving her even more alone in this fight.

“I don’t know where we go from here, but I imagine it’ll likely be impassable in her relationship with Alicent, which I think also means Helaena’s death condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit of power,” Emma D’Arcy added.

The Season 2 finale made everyone believe Rhaenyra and Alicent could finally repair their fractured friendship.

However, with Otto Hightower’s (Rhys Ifans) beheading, the task of killing Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), and Helaena’s death under Rhaenyra’s watch, it looks like there will be no way for the two to reconcile.

With that said, there may be a brutal confrontation between the two in the final season. And with Rhaenyra’s descent into darkness, a different queen may eventually sit on the Iron Throne, with its corruptive powers pushing her further down this villainous path.

House of the Dragon Season 4 is set to be released in 2028. The first three seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
