In House of the Dragon season 3 episode 7, Aemond Targaryen remains under the spell and influence of the mysterious woodswitch Alys Rivers within the decaying walls of Harrenhal.

Aiming to bind Aemond to her and secure a Targaryen heir, Alys takes advantage of Aemond's complex "mommy issues" and Oedipal fixations through magic and illusion.

During an intimate scene in bed, Aemond is initially led to believe he is in the arms of his actual mother, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). Once Alys reveals her true face in the middle of it, Aemond panics and flees the chamber, only to bump into the real Alicent, who had just arrived at Harrenhal on a covert mission.

Gayle Rankin Reveals How They Filmed the Most 'F*****-Up' Scene in the Series

Discussing the controversial moment, Gayle Rankin shared the experience of how she, Ewan Mitchell, and Olivia Cooke managed to walk through the uncomfortable set piece. Rankin explained in an interview with Variety that the actors and directors essentially had to embrace its sheer oddity.

"It was very intimate and very odd, but very professional. We tried to like, make jokes, just to keep it lighthearted because those scenes are not easy and they're complicated and very technical," Rankin told the outlet, "So it was also just like it was another day at the office for being like a very odd, f*****-up scene."

While the character of Alys plays into Aemond's fetishes to maintain control over him, Rankin added that the arrival of the actual Alicent created the very human, petty conflict for the witch, forcing her to compete with the real object of Aemond's unhealthy devotion.

Now that the real Alicent is present, Alys loses her monopoly over Aemond's mind, and considering that Aemond does not take lightly when his pride and power are manipulated, it's only a matter of time before the prince lashes out on his final straw.

Whether or not Alys successfully binds Aemond to hatch Dreamfyre's eggs and secure her freedom or face his wrath, their unholy alliance will reach a breaking point before season 3 concludes.

In the meantime, fans can wait until House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 finale premieres Sunday, August 9, 2026, on HBO Max. Stay tuned!
