House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3 opens with Ormund Hightower (James Norton) seemingly surrendering to Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and handing over his squire, Daeron Targaryen.

However, Ormund is only pretending to cooperate. The Daeron he sends to Daemon is a decoy, allowing the real prince to remain with the Hightower army as Ormund sets his sights on his next objective: Tumbleton.

Located in the Reach, not far from House Hightower's seat of Oldtown, Tumbleton is a prosperous market town before the Dance of the Dragons.

While it isn't home to one of Westeros' great houses and has little historical significance on its own, its strategic location makes it a key prize during the civil war.

The town is ruled by House Footly, which is loyal to Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy). It also sits near the border between the Reach and the Crownlands and close to the headwaters of the Mander, making it an important military and supply hub. So, what does Ormund's move mean for House of the Dragon Season 3?

In Fire & Blood, the novel by George R. R. Martin on which House of the Dragon is based, Tumbleton is the site of two of the Dance of the Dragons' most significant clashes: the First and Second Battles of Tumbleton.

The HBO series, however, has already made a major change to that storyline.

In the book, Rhaenyra sends Hugh Hammer and Ulf White, along with their dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing, to Tumbleton because it is the last major stronghold standing between the Hightower host and King's Landing. Their mission is to defend the town and stop Daeron Targaryen and his dragon, Tessarion, from advancing.

But the show takes a different approach. Instead of waiting for Rhaenyra to make the first move, Ormund Hightower reaches Tumbleton first after deceiving Daemon with a fake Daeron.

The change just shows Ormund's strategic thinking and willingness to outmaneuver his enemies before they can react.

At first glance, Ormund doesn't seem to have much reason to seize Tumbleton. However, occupying the town puts pressure on the Blacks and could force Rhaenyra into a response on his terms.

The series also revealed that Hugh's wife has traveled to Tumbleton to live with her brother, giving Hugh a personal reason to head there. That change could naturally set the stage for the First Battle of Tumbleton while tying the conflict more closely to the characters' motivations.

Although challenging Rhaenyra and her dragons is a dangerous gamble, a battle at Tumbleton would come at a high cost. If the town and its people suffer because of the battle, Rhaenyra could lose support and weaken her claim as queen.
