Meanwhile, Daemon (Matt Smith) is fully committed to supporting his wife's campaign to seize King's Landing. As the two finally work toward the same goal, D'Arcy and Smith have revealed how Rhaenyra and Daemon's latest move will reshape the rest of Season 3.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2

Rhaenyra and Daemon are back together in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 after spending much of the previous season rallying allies in different parts of Westeros.

The two are now poised to take over King's Landing after Alicent left the gates open for Rhaenyra's arrival in exchange for the freedom of herself and her family.

Now reunited in the Red Keep, the pair are once again at the center of power.

"The Red Keep is the sort of locus of power. And I'd been in exile on the Dragonstone set for a season, and so it's nice to be back at the heart of things," Emma D'Arcy told Variety. "And Rhaenyra and Daemon operate as one organism in that homecoming."

However, while the two celebrate their victory, Daemon may have made a costly mistake that could threaten Rhaenyra's reign as the new Queen.

At the end of Episode 2, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) encounters Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) after taking control of Harrenhal while Rhaenyra and Daemon seize King's Landing.

Earlier in the episode, Daemon rejected Alys' request to claim Harrenhal in exchange for pledging her allegiance to Rhaenyra. As a result, Alys may now choose to side with Aemond if he offers her a better deal.

So, will Daemon come to regret denying Alys Harrenhal?

"I think in Daemon's peculiar world of affection, on some level, his time at Harrenhal was productive for him, in terms of opening up slightly with Ser Simon Strong and his cohorts," Smith said. "So perhaps there is a degree of gratitude that has gone unsaid with Daemon that he's not expressed to Alys. So yeah, most probably."

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2

Alicent may have tried to salvage her childhood bond with Rhaenyra and negotiate peace in the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, but the Dance of the Dragons has ultimately driven them apart.

Any remaining hope of a true reconciliation is shattered by the war's brutality and their opposing loyalties. That divide becomes even more apparent after Alicent comes before Rhaenyra, now seated on the Iron Throne, only to see the bloodied and beheaded body of her father, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), following Rhaenyra and Daemon's takeover of the Red Keep.

As the episode ends, Rhaenyra appears torn between explaining herself and simply letting Alicent witness the consequences of her decision to help her former best friend return to King's Landing and seize the Iron Throne from her son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney).

Now, it seems whatever alliance they forged in the Season 2 finale has completely fallen apart, though much depends on how Alicent responds.

"Rhaenyra still perceives Alicent as her judge and jury, regardless of how polarized their positions have become," D'Arcy said.

"I think, because they were friends, best friends, in childhood, and because they were so close at the point of Rhaenyra's mother's death, I think there was some sort of transference there," she continued. "Ultimately, I still think that Rhaenyra craves Alicent's affirmation. So to find herself so far from Alicent's kindness and affirmation is really stark. And as with those long relationships where we witness one another through our life, Rhaenyra sees something of herself from the outside: sort of everything that's come before."
